Just been reading an article about this seasons Boston Celtics
http://www.nba.com/2010/news/features/shaun_powell/05/23/celtics.improve/index.html?ls=iref:nbahpt1
A particular comment by Doc Rivers stood out for me:
"We have single guys who can go off," said coach Doc Rivers, "but I never found that to be an effective way to play offense. I think it's very predictable. We had a possession (in Game 3) with eight passes with no dribble, and Kevin ended up with the shot. That's just unselfish basketball. I think they trust each other. That's good."
I think this is a good start for Revolution's season is the idea of unselfish basketball, this isn't a dig at anyone, but a shout out to the team that we can't rely on Brett, Matt and Marc to do all the scoring...as Doc said probably after the last Revolution game he was scouting at "I think it's very predictable."
Last year there were a large number of players that could score during training and from what I have seen at the Wednesday sessions there are plenty of people that can put the ball in the hoop, but you have to have the confidence to try this in a game. Too many times last season whilst I was playing or spectating you could see that teams would quickly figure out the players that were willing to take a shot and focus on them on defence.
There are 2 points I am trying to make here:
1) Marc, Brett and Matt; you have to consider making the pass to the open man, this will ultimately make you life easier during the game, as team mates will move and create space, and if they take their shots force the defence to give you abit more space to work your magic.
2) To everyone else, myself included, we have to work to get open knowing that if we do we will get the ball and be free to take an open shot. This will make everyones life easier and it is unfair to expect Brett, Matt and Marc to do all the scoring.
Statistically if you look at the fact that we averaged only 64 points per game over 18 regular season games and came 5th, whereas the team that won our division averaged just under 74 points per game, its not unrealistic to think we can find an extra 5-6 baskets per game. Especially when you look at the league stats and see that between Brett, Matt and Marc they averaged 46.9 of our 64 points per game that says a lot about what we need to do as a team.
So the challenge I am laying down is that by the end of next season we, as a team, are averaging 80 points per game.
That's just under 7 points each for a team of 12 players, 8 points per game for a team of 10 and only 10 point each for a team of 8. So think to yourself is it unrealistic to expect yourself to make no more that 5 baskets per game...I know my points per game have never been very high, but this is a really acheiveable target to set yourself for the season.
Also, if you are scoring then you are more likely to be having fun...right Brett
See you all at the next training session I am available and as usual if you don't like something I have said then have a chat with me. _________________ Doing the little things make the big things easier...and that's not a reference to midgets |
